NEMA ratings for enclosures are performance standards set by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). They have entered the vocabulary of electrical enclosures users so fully that the use of the terms NEMA 3R, NEMA 4X and others have become practically generic. An enclosure rated for either NEMA12 or NEMA4 protects hazardous parts access; ingress of solid foreign objects (dirt, dust, fibers, lint, etc.); and ingress of water (splashing to hose-down) at different levels. Other levels (3R, 4X, etc.) offer very specific enhanced levels of protection for unique installation environments. NEMA ratings are most often used for installation in industrial applications and environments and are primarily used in North America.

NEMA Ratings for Enclosures

NEMA vs. IP Ratings
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings focus solely on water and solid object intrusion. While they offer a basic understanding of protective capability, they do not address corrosion resistance, oil exposure, icing, or tampering.
In contrast, NEMA ratings provide both performance criteria and construction requirements, giving designers and installers more guidance when selecting enclosures for harsh or unique environments. For applications like oil and gas, transportation, industrial use, and utilities, NEMA enclosure ratings offer broader protection against real-world hazards.
How to Compare NEMA and IP
Although both NEMA and IP systems classify enclosures, they are based on different variables and cannot be directly converted. IP ratings are limited to protection from dust and water, while NEMA rated enclosures are also evaluated for corrosion resistance, atmospheric gases (such as acetylene or gasoline), and use in hazardous or non-hazardous settings.
For example, NEMA includes requirements for performance in icy conditions, which IP does not address. As a result, meeting an IP rating does not automatically ensure compliance with a NEMA enclosure rating.
