International Protection (IP) Ratings

The IP rating system classifies the degree of protection from solid objects and liquids afforded by electrical equipment and enclosures. This rating system is most prevalently recognized in European countries and meets a number of British and European standards, including those established by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

In the IP rating system, the first number identifies the degree of protection against solid objects and the second number identifies the degree of protection against liquids.

If your application requires a specific IP rating, we've listed typical equivalent NEMA ratings. The cross reference of ratings is not an exact science and, in many cases, more than one IP rating can be matched to a NEMA rating.
